Greetings to the Hampton Little League community from the 2017 9/10 Tournament Team. The tournament is being hosted by Lakehill Little League and the field has been especially competitive this year.
Today, your Hampton 9/10’s won their first game of the tournament, defeating
National Little League in a close contest after dropping their first two
games against perennial powerhouse Layritz and the surprisingly upstart
Central Saanich. A little more than half of our roster this year is
comprised of players who have never played in a tournament like this, so they are receiving a crash course in what it takes to compete at this advanced level.
Though our players have found the level of play challenging, they have shown
steady improvement as the tournament has progressed. Tristan Lam, a 9 year
old newcomer to tournament play, had the honor of scoring Hampton’s first
run of the tournament. Meanwhile, 10 year old Reese Hammond has – so far – hit two near home runs to score 5 RBI’s. And we’ve had several players who
have risen to the occasion to pitch near flawlessly such as Jonny Twist,
Callum Peterson, and Jack Jeffery.
Of course, all of this could not have happened without the amazing effort
put forth by our team of selfless Hampton volunteers. Our 9/10 team has been
coached by dedicated individuals such as Ray Jeffery, Christine Twist, Dana
Carroll, and Mike Peterson who have each invested dozens of hours to prepare
these kids to play. They look like pro’s out on the field, too, thanks to
the work of Christa Paquin and our amazing team parent, Daryl Twist. We’re
sure that if you look up the word “organized” in the dictionary, you’ll find
a picture of Daryl. He continues to be the glue that holds this team
together.
The only thing that could help our players more is to see happy, familiar Hampton faces in the crowd to cheer them on. We play again on Tuesday, July 4, at 3pm against a strong Beacon Hill team and then wrap up the round robin portion of the tournament at 6pm on Wednesday, July 5, against the host Lakehill team.
